A Visit to El Cerro del Creston in Mazatlán

MAZATLÁN, México, June 16, 2016 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- No trip to Mazatlán is complete without a trip up the historic mountain known as El Cerro del Creston. El Cid Vacations Club highly recommends a visit to the legendary lighthouse that sits atop the peak.

Not only is El Faro, as the lighthouse is known, the second tallest working lighthouse in the world, it allows for a breathtaking view of the harbor and the surrounding islands. More than 500 feet above the water, El Faro is worth the trip to the top of El Cerro del Creston in Mazatlán.

In existence since its construction in 1879, the lighthouse is a stunning piece of work and can be seen by ships as far as 30 nautical miles away! El Cid Vacations Club notes that many visitors to Mazatlán hike the winding trail to the top of the peak.

El Cerro del Creston was an island at one time, but is now connected to the rest of the city by a narrow land bridge and sits on the southernmost part of Mazatlán. Long before the lighthouse was built in the late 1800s, the peak was used as a crude navigational signpost for ships at sea. Locals would burn coconut chips, wood and whale oil to create huge fires so ships could navigate by the light of the flames. Later, when it was time to construct a more proper lighthouse, a larger structure was built and outfitted with a very powerful beacon.

In its early days as a lighthouse, ship captains often mistook it for a star because it did not move. By the early 1900s, the old oil lamp and mirror kit was replaced with a "modern," revolving hydrogen lamp that allowed ships from near and far to navigate their way into the port.

El Cid Vacations Club reminds those traveling to Mazatlán that the entire city is a virtual treasure trove of interesting history and cultural attractions. The El Faro lighthouse atop El Cerro del Creston is but one of the countless attractions that make any trip to Mazatlán a memorable experience for the whole family.

In 1933, the hydrogen light and mirror system was finally replaced with the electrical beacon that still occupies the lighthouse atop Mazatlán's El Cerro del Creston, one of the city's most attractive geographic features.
