CHICAGO, June 2, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- As a potentially record-setting summer travel season approaches, ThermalStrike is joining the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) in a celebration of Bedbug Awareness Week from June 5-11 in hopes of keeping the nasty critters from spreading.
According to Airlines for America, an estimated 231 million people are planning to fly this summer, shattering last year's previous all-time high by four percent. The extraordinary number of travelers also means an increased risk of a bedbug infestation. While hotels are among the top two most-common bedbug dwellings, these pests are also found in hospitals, nursing homes, movie theaters, retail stores, universities and public schools… and even libraries.
"If you're among the millions who plan on traveling over the next few months, you're at a higher risk for bringing along bedbugs as they transfer from one person to another," said Brian Hirsch, director of sales for ThermalStrike, a line of innovative products featuring state-of-the-art infrared technology that is lethal to all stages of bedbugs. "Fortunately, there are a few simple proactive steps that travelers can take to avoid an infestation and eliminate stress about a potential encounter with these pests."
Researchers have recently discovered that bedbugs have developed a thicker skin, making it easier for them to survive common pesticides. To combat this, the NPMA recommends exposure to temperatures above 118°F for successful bedbug management. ThermalStrike Luggage is designed to exceed these temperatures to kill all stages of bedbugs and eggs, while regulating temperatures that are safe for most luggage items.
"By raising the luggage's handle and simply plugging the unit into a traditional wall socket, it treats all of your belongings," Hirsch says. "It offers peace of mind for travelers once they get to their destination, and when they return home."
Available in two sizes, a 20″ carry-on and 24″ upright, ThermalStrike luggage is TSA and FAA compliant and features an ultra-thin heating system with an integrated thermometer that automatically shuts off after reaching the desired temperature to kill all life stages of bedbugs.
Hirsch offers additional tips for travelers to consider this summer:
- Be prepared: Protect yourself while traveling. Thoroughly check your hotel room and use bedbug-proof luggage like ThermalStrike.
- Be on the lookout. Bedbug signs include: itchy, red welts on skin, black fecal material in mattress folds and black/red spots on sheets.
- Be Aware: Bedbugs hide in common spots like trains, buses, movie theaters, the gym and other public places.
- Use helpful apps like Bed Bug 101 mobile app to stay aware when you're on the go.
