TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., June 2, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- North Korea Travel Warning Updated May 16

The State Department is warning against all travel to North Korea due to the risk of being detained or arrested without warning or cause. North Korea imposes extremely harsh punishments for seemingly mild offenses. Offenses can range from showing disrespect to the country's leaders to having interaction with the locals. Those entering North Korea despite the warnings are subject to having their electronic devices searched for banned material or even confiscated. Punishment for unlawful electronic media can be punishable by heavy fines and long-term detention under harsh conditions. In the last ten years more than 10 U.S. citizens have been detained and the U.S. has been unsuccessful in negotiating the release of those who have been detained.

Somalia Travel Warning Updated May 24

U.S. citizens are being warned to avoid travel to Somalia due to the ongoing threat from the terrorists group Al-Qaida and associated group Al-Shabaab. The area continues to remain unstable including risk of kidnapping and other violent crimes, including bombings and murder. These incidents have been reported at popular tourist attractions, hotels and places where people gather. There is no United States Embassy in Somalia, but even in territories with government control, the terrorists have been successful in carrying out attacks. Airports and civil aviation are especially at risk as well as the waters near the coast of Somalia due to pirate activity in the area.

Europe Travel Alert Updated May 31

U.S. travelers should remain vigilant when traveling to Europe this summer. An ongoing effort by the State Department remains in force in an effort to protect U.S. travelers and keep them current on the latest threats and risks. Risks include possible terrorist attacks in all European countries. Events where the public is gathering in large numbers are of highest risk. Of special concern are the European Soccer Championships due to take place between June 10 and July 10 in France and the Tour de France cycling event which begins on July 2 and runs through the 24. Poland is another area of concern beginning on July 26 due to the Catholic Church's World Youth Day event that runs for five days. The event draws over 2.5 million people but Poland is preparing for the event by imposing strict security measures leading up to and throughout the event.
