Dallas Fort Worth International Airport Marks Five-Year Milestone with 13 Million Hours of Safety for Workers

DFW AIRPORT, Texas, March 28, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Dallas Fort Worth International (DFW) Airport today celebrated five years of accomplishments in safety, risk management and best practices in construction management through its Rolling Owner Controlled Insurance Program (R/OCIP) and received the prestigious Willis Eagle Award for Excellence in Safety from Willis Towers Watson. The Eagle Award recognizes the Airport's commitment to safety and collaborative success under R/OCIP.

The DFW Airport Board implemented the R/OCIP on Feb. 15, 2011, as a coordinated master insurance, safety and accidental claim management program. Since 2011, DFW's R/OCIP has surpassed the following key operational metrics:

  • 13 million man-hours worked without any significant losses
  • 2,000 contracts enrolled
  • $311 million in total Construction Management at Risk (CMAR) payroll
  • 14,000 workers attending DFW Safety Training Sessions
  • 12,000 workers successfully completing the DFW R/OCIP Background Screening Program

"In its first five years, we consider DFW's R/OCIP to be a great success and an important safety and accountability measure for both the Airport and our partners involved in the $3 billion multi-year Terminal Renewal and Improvement Program (TRIP)," said DFW Airport CEO Sean Donohue. "For DFW and our construction partners, it means that hundreds of workers on-the-job renovating our terminals and parking garages worked millions of hours – safely – in a heavy construction environment. The focus on safety was a direct result of the R/OCIP program and took continual focus and commitment from all involved."

"The Excellence in Safety Award is presented to companies who represent the best in construction work practices," said Chet Mitrani, executive vice president, Willis Towers Watson, who presented the corporation's Eagle Award to DFW Airport. "It recognizes direct evidence of corporate commitment, worker training, active participation and safety innovation."

With DFW's renovation of Terminals A, B, and E nearly 70 percent complete, four major contractors were also recognized for their commitment to safety today: Balfour Azteca Russell Carcon, Manhattan Byrne JRT 3i, Turner Omega Howard and Woodbine Clark Contractors.

The DFW R/OCIP is a partnership coordinated with the Airport's Risk Management and Design Code and Construction divisions, as well as Willis Towers Watson, Willis National Construction Practice, National Insurance Consultants, Inc., and Global Learning Solutions. Through the R/OCIP, DFW Airport trains its construction contractors in superior safety management and site control and the ability to mitigate losses for contractors. The "rolling" feature of R/OCIP allows DFW Airport to apply this coverage to multiple and sizable construction projects.

For the 235 Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises involved in TRIP, DFW's R/OCIP program enables them to benefit from the insurance coverage in order to be able to participate in these major construction programs with the appropriate insurance.

"If you've been to our Airport, you've undoubtedly seen progress all around. DFW's board and leadership are committed to excellence—not just in what we build, but how we build it," said Linda Valdez Thompson, executive vice president of Administration and Diversity at DFW Airport. "In the first five years of our R/OCIP, DFW and our partners have established an incredible foundation for additional growth as a global superhub."
