Sept. 16 is Mexican Independence Day, which of course is celebrated in every city and town. There are always large parades, family reunions, picnics, and a speech by the nation's president the day before. Citizens drape all the government building in Mexico's national colors to symbolize their collective pride in their heritage.

Ethnicity Day, aka Columbus Day on Oct. 12, during which everyone celebrates the unification of the Mexican and Spanish people.

Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos), will be celebrated from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, 2016. The holiday is celebrated throughout Mexico as well as in many other nations. Friends and family get together to remember those who have passed away. In fact, Day of the Dead is an official national holiday in Mexico, with banks and postal offices closed.

In mid-November, there is the unusual and spectacular Annual Yucatán Bird Festival (Festival de las Aves de Yucatán), celebrated in Mérida, Yucatán. The event is designed to highlight the key role that birds play in the ecosystem of the earth, according to El Cid Vacations Club.

On Dec. 12, is the celebration of the Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe, which is an important holiday all over Mexico. There are festivities of every kind, making it one of Mexico's most beautiful representations of culture.

Each year on Dec. 28, Mexico celebrates a form of what is called "April Fool's Day" in the U.S. Everyone gets in on the fun, even the major newspapers. Comical, fictitious headlines adorn the news pages and everyone seems to be in a joking mood. El Cid Vacations Club notes that the day is quite similar to the U.S. version.

Here are some more dates of importance:

Nov. 20: A nationwide celebration of "Revolution Day" commemorating the 1910 event.

Dec. 12 to 21: Festival of San Cristóbal de las Casas.

Christmas Posadas, for nine evenings before Christmas, there are reenactments of Biblical events.

Christmas: From Dec. 25 through New Year's Day, a traditional vacation period for everyone to celebrate the religious holiday.

El Cid Vacations Club encourages travelers to enjoy the many interesting holidays of Mexico.
