KEARNEY, ON, Jan. 18, 2016 /CNW/ - More than 75 dog sled teams will compete in and around the Town of Kearney, near Algonquin Park, at Ontario's largest annual dog sled competition to be held on Saturday February 13th and Sunday February 14th.

Kearney, in the beautiful Almaguin Highlands on the western edge of Algonquin Park, is half an hour north of Huntsville on Hwy 518E, just 8 km east of Hwy 11.

The Kearney Dog Sled Races are now sanctioned as a World Cup Event by the International Federation of Sled Dog Sport (IFSS) in preparation for the World Championships coming to Haliburton in 2017.

Dog Sled Teams hoping to represent Canada there need to collect points gained while competing in "World Cup Events" in the season prior to the Championships.

There will be 4 and 6 dog sprint races, men's and women's ski-joring sprints with either 1 or 2 dogs, as well as Ontario's longest mid-distance race, our 10 dog, 50 mile stage race, and our popular "Kid and Mutt Race" is worth the visit to Kearney all by itself!

Festivities start Friday evening, February 12th, with a family skate and bonfire with free hot dogs and hot chocolate at the Kearney Lions Park, and conclude Sunday at 4:30 with a lasagna dinner during prize presentations.
