ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., March 22, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- On Wednesday, March 22, 2017, a man drove into a crowd and stabbed an armed officer outside the London Houses of Parliament. Travel insurance comparison site, Squaremouth, explains travel insurance coverage for concerned travelers.

As of March 22, the attack has not been declared an act of terrorism by the U.S. Department of State - this is required in order for this event to be covered under travel insurance policies.

If the attack is declared an act of terrorism, insured travelers may have the following coverage:

Reimbursement for the Cost of Their Trip
Travelers can be reimbursed for 100% of their trip cost under the Trip Cancellation benefit if they meet the following requirements:

  • They must be departing within 7-30 days of the attack, depending on the policy
  • They must be traveling to London or a nearby city
  • They must have purchased their policy prior to March 22, 2017

Transportation Home
Travelers currently in London can be covered to return home early under Trip Interruption. This benefit reimburses unused trip expenses and additional transportation expenses incurred to return home.

If the attack is not declared an act of terrorism, the standard Trip Cancellation benefit will not be triggered. However, there is one benefit that insured travelers may be eligible for:

Cancel For Any Reason
Cancel For Any Reason is an optional upgrade that must be purchased within 14-30 days of the traveler's initial trip deposit date. This benefit allows travelers to cancel for reasons otherwise excluded.

To cancel a trip under this benefit, travelers must cancel their trip in its entirety at least 2-3 days before their scheduled departure date, and can be reimbursed up to 75% of their trip cost.

Travelers concerned about future attacks can still buy a policy for an upcoming trip to London, but policies purchased after March 22 will not include coverage for this attack.

Squaremouth launched the London Parliament Attack and Travel Insurance Information Center to keep travelers informed about coverage for this attack. This resource will be regularly updated as more information becomes available.
