WASHINGTON, Jan. 16, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The partial government shutdown is now in its fourth week, and no resolution is in sight. In an effort to expand the discussion about the effects of the shutdown, local members of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) will begin handing out informational leaflets on Thursday, January 17, at Dulles International Airport. Participating air traffic controllers and other aviation safety professionals plan to engage with travelers to explain how the partial government shutdown is detrimental to the safety and efficiency of the National Airspace System. Other leafleting began this week at the Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Minneapolis-St. Paul, and Raleigh-Durham airports, along with dozens of others. NATCA members plan to expand these activities to about 50 additional airports around the country in coming days.

NATCA members will distribute brochures explaining how the shutdown results in air traffic controllers being compelled to work without a timely paycheck, and how other aviation safety professionals are being furloughed. Participating members will explain how the shutdown will worsen a controller staffing crisis that has existed since a previous government shutdown in 2013. They will describe how the shutdown stopped all modernization projects at the FAA.

LOCATION OF LEAFLETING: Dulles International Airport, West Security Checkpoint.

WHEN: Beginning 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17. NATCA Potomac Consolidated TRACON Representative Brandon Miller will be on hand starting at 10:00 a.m. and will be available for interviews with the media. He can be reached at (540) 219-6021. Additional interviews can be coordinated through NATCA Associate Director of Public Affairs, Grace Colby. She can be reached at gcolby@natcadc.org or (512) 740-4406.

NATCA is one of the strongest federal sector labor unions and represents nearly 20,000 highly skilled aviation safety-related professionals. NATCA was certified in 1987 by the Federal Labor Relations Authority to be the exclusive bargaining representative for air traffic controllers employed by the FAA. Air traffic controllers and other aviation safety professionals make vital contributions to the U.S. economy and make modern life possible by coordinating the safe, orderly, and expeditious movement of nearly one billion aviation passengers and millions of tons of freight within the National Airspace System each year. NATCA is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and is affiliated with the AFL-CIO.
