CHARLESTOWN, Nevis, Jan. 30, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Many visitors come to Nevis by a quick and pleasant 7-minute ferry from St. Kitts across the channel to Oualie Beach. On Sunday, March 26, 2017, swimmers will be taking that same path back to St. Kitts for the annual Cross Channel Swim.

The swim distance is 2.5 miles from Oualie Beach on Nevis across the "narrows" to finish at Cockleshell Beach in St. Kitts. This year will be the 16th annual Bente Weber Memorial Swim and continues to offer both a race and a challenge to open water swim enthusiasts and adventurers who will be taking on some of the best open ocean swimmers in the world.

It is open to swimmers of all skill levels and those who may not be as seasoned are encouraged to use snorkel masks or fins to make it across the narrows.

This year, the Cross Channel Swim is partnering with the Special Olympics organization of St. Kitts and Nevis to raise awareness of their activities and athletes as well as much needed funds.

The race entry fee is US$85 before January 31, 2017, US$95 before February 28, US$100 after March 1 and US$115 on race day. The entry fee includes an event T-shirt, swim cap, finisher medal, chip timing, prizes and a breakfast party on St. Kitts after the swim. There will also be one-way boat transportation from St. Kitts or Nevis before or after the swim. Rescue boats and kayaks will be available to those who need to rest, eat or stop.

Prizes will be awarded in a number of age categories, as well as for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place male and female in all categories. There is a special prize of U$500 to anyone who breaks the current record, which was set in 2011 by Olivier Marceau at a time of 58:09.
