Newseum to Host Annual Journalists Memorial Rededication June 6

WASHINGTON, May 25, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Monday, June 6, at 10 a.m., the Newseum will rededicate its Journalists Memorial, which recognizes men and women who died or were killed while reporting the news. The names of 20 journalists will be added to the memorial to represent all those who died in pursuit of the news in 2015.

Gérard Araud, ambassador of France to the United States, will deliver keynote remarks during the ceremony. The largest single attack on journalists in 2015 took place at the offices of the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris.

"To report the news, journalists face injury and threats, and some pay the ultimate sacrifice to hold governments and others accountable," said Gene Policinski, chief operating officer of the Newseum Institute. "Each year, the rededication of the Journalists Memorial reminds us of the sacrifices made by journalists around the world and of the real, continual threats to press freedom."

With this year's addition of 20 journalists, the memorial bears the names of 2,291 reporters, photographers, broadcasters and news executives from around the world, dating back to 1837. The journalists being recognized at this year's rededication are:

A previous memorial was displayed in Freedom Park at the Newseum's former site in Arlington, Va.
