VICTORIA, Malta, July 9, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Behind every great sporting victory lies a crew most fans hardly knew existed – the backroom staff. These critical support workers include coaches, trainers, and strategic analysts whose paychecks hardly resemble the big bucks that go to star athletes.

Researchers at OnlineGambling.com compiled extensive data investigating how much backroom salaries vary across different sports leagues, and then asked: Are teams that invest more in backroom staff more successful?

To present the results of their research, OnlineGambling.com created an interactive tool across NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB that shows how much the biggest teams are paying those employees who support these athletic efforts:

OG's research unearthed many curious disparities across America's top sports leagues:

In the NBA, for example…

Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors, the highest paid player in the sport's history, earns nearly $32.5 million more than head coach Steve Kerr. Meanwhile, the highest paid coach in the league, San Antonio's Gregg Popovich, earns $11 million a year – which is $700,000 less than the NBA's lowest paid player, Zach Randolph.

In the NFL…

Ever since Super Bowl I in 1971, the typical number of offensive coaches for an NFL team has quadrupled, and defensive coaches have tripled. But teams with the most success, such as the New England Patriots, aren't the ones that spend most on player salaries. That honor goes to the lowly Oakland Raiders, who spend $2.99 million annually per player on average.

In the NHL…

A typical pro hockey team has a backroom staff of 22. Head coaches earn, on average, $2.1 million a year. Backroom staff, by comparison, make about $85,000. Nearly half of these employees consist of strength and conditioning coaches. With this, researchers calculated how much injuries can cost a team. The Dallas Stars pay about $145,000 per injury for a total cost of $867,139.

In MLB…

MLB puts a huge importance on statistics and data analytics, so it's hardly surprising that analysts comprise nearly half a typical pro baseball team's backroom staff. But their disparity in pay is some of the greatest. The Toronto Blue Jays, for example, pay star third-baseman Josh Donaldson a staggering $23 million salary. Their average backroom staffer, by comparison, earns $39,876 per year.
