CANTLEY, QC, June 18, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - This summer, you're invited to visit Hydro-Québec's Rapides-Farmer generating station for an extraordinary experience.  In the heart of Gatineau, just 6 km from Hull, lies a landmark of Outaouais history. This gem of a power plant, in operation since 1927, will reveal the secrets of hydropower and the Rivière Gatineau.

Amazing history

Straddling a river once used to float timber, Rapides-Farmer generating station was acquired by Hydro-Québec in 1963 in the second phase of the nationalization of electricity. On your visit, you'll see the industrial remains of Hydro-Québec's longest log chute, which bypassed two facilities. The 2,134-m log chute was dismantled in 1990.

One-of-a-kind powerhouse

Unlike many other generating stations, Rapides-Farmer has no spillway. Instead, it has a weir that lets out water when the level gets too high. And did you know the course of the Rivière Gatineau was diverted so it would run to the powerhouse? Come discover the unique features of this invaluable heritage facility.
