San Antonio, Austin Mayors To Meet in Breakfast Taco Summit

SAN ANTONIO, March 9, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Great Breakfast Taco War of 2016 will be settled Thursday morning when San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor and Austin Mayor Steve Adler will announce a cease fire. Adler, in a news release, said the officials "are negotiating a taco treaty that they hope to formalize at a taco summit."

The mayors, each bringing samples of delicious breakfast tacos from their respective communities, will meet for the summit at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Hilton Austin Downtown.

The Taco Treaty will bring to an end a debate that has raged since Feb. 19 when the blog Austin Eater published a story pinpointing Austin as the birthplace of the name, "breakfast taco." San Antonio, along with other cities throughout South Texas, took exception. The mayors, tongues and taste buds firmly in cheek, weighed in with long-distance barbs that included Mayor Adler, on Feb. 27, declaring a "taco war" with his neighbors to the south.

Taylor responded, "OK, Mayor Adler and all you longhorn-loving, live-music-listening, boardwalk-running Austinites, I and all the taco-making, taco-eating, taco-reigning San Antonians will take your challenge and raise you one machacado con huevo taco on a flour tortilla recien hecha (freshly made) con salsa verde." She added, "I'll bring some of our favorite tacos and you bring yours!"

This week, however, the stomachs spoke louder than harsh words. Peace, and salsa, will reign.

Adler, in joining Taylor in announcing the cease fire and summit, said, "When it comes to the loyalty that our cities have for the infinite possibilities created when you put scrambled eggs into a warm tortilla, there is more that unites Austin and San Antonio than could ever divide us.

"I am confident we will reach a mutually satisfactory agreement on the I-35 Accords. We will have guac in our times."

Taylor will bring 50 freshly made breakfast tacos from Mittman Fine Foods in San Antonio. Adler will counter with 50 bacon-and-egg tacos on corn tortillas from Juan in a Million, the winner of the Austin Chronicle's best breakfast taco title.
