Silicon Valley Tech Office Hosts Guangdong Food Week

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Tourism Administration Board of Guangdong Province ("Visit Guangdong") is touching down stateside this week by taking over the cafeteria of a leading tech firm in Silicon Valley.

Beginning yesterday, the week-long event is celebrating the unique cuisine that hails from Guangdong, China's most populous province. Named after the region's previous Romanised title, "Cantonese" cuisine consists of a broad range of dishes but is best known for its dim sum; bite-sized portions traditionally served in steamer baskets containing 4-5 pieces of light bites such as dumplings, steamed buns and sesame seed balls.

The event will see some of San Francisco's top techies tasting a broad variety of Cantonese dishes, as well as receiving postcards, traditional Chinese puzzles and taking part in Tangram, an ancient Chinese challenge originating in the Tang Dynasty. Those who successfully complete the challenge will be awarded a mystery grand prize.

Typical Cantonese cuisine boasts a global appeal thanks to the variety of fresh ingredients it incorporates, with chefs focusing on their natural flavours without resorting to excessive use of herbs and spices to produce a mouth-watering taste. The region is famous for its sweet and sour dishes, but traditional foods include so much more; including goose, Chinese sausage and vegetables served in oyster sauce.

Participants will also get the chance to enter the tourism board's "Guangdong Guide" competition, which has already seen 3 lucky winners sent on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to China and is set to send 5 more between now and January.
