LONDON, March 24, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --

A survey of UK travel experts has revealed the ten most charming towns in the East Midlands. The survey by TravelMag.com invited 100 travel writers, photographers and selected professionals to name the towns they consider the most appealing.

Those surveyed were asked to vote for towns in any of the region's six recognised shires (Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland) with populations of between 3,000 and 50,000 people. Each participant was asked to disclose their top three choices before all votes were added up to produce the final ten.

Of the six shires, Northamptonshire proved to be the most popular, with a total of three towns (Brackley, Oundle and Towcester) in the top ten hailing from this area. Historically, all three are market towns and boast ancient architecture and other places of interest.

Derbyshire is represented by the old market town of Bakewell - birthplace of the famous Bakewell pudding - and the spa town of Buxton, while contributing a duo of towns to the lists are Rutland (Oakham, Uppingham) and Lincolnshire (Long Sutton, Stamford).

The presence of Stamford on the list is little surprise, given that it was voted the best place to live in the United Kingdom in another survey in 2013. Nestled on the River Welland, Stamford is dotted with 17th and 18th century stone buildings and several medieval parish churches.

Completing the top ten list is Market Harborough, the sole representative of Leicestershire, situated in an area which was formerly a part of the Rockingham Forest, a royal hunting forest used by the medieval monarchs including William I.

Spanning more than 6,000 square metres, the East Midlands extends from the centre of England all the way out to the country's eastern coastline. The region has a total population of more than 4.5 million people.
