The Leonardo To Open A New Exhibit On Human Rights

SALT LAKE CITY, April 7, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Just off the closing of their recent exhibit featuring the Mummies of the World, The Leonardo opens a brand new, original exhibit entitled We Declare: An Exhibit About Human Rights. The exhibit, which encourages people of all ages to consider their own human rights, is unique in its presentation. With the popularity of coloring books for grown-ups, this exhibit features a number of oversized panels, created by local Utah artists, that serve as giant coloring pages—similar to a children's coloring book.

"It's one thing to look at art created by an artist, it's yet another to be a part of creating art," says Alexandra Hesse, Executive Director of The Leonardo. "We chose the idea of coloring books as our starting point because there is something fundamentally meditative about coloring and it's an activity that people of all ages can do. When you're in the exhibit coloring, you can get a sense of how important these human rights are to everyone, everywhere."

The exhibit opens in conjunction with the Weekend of Welcome, an event designed to help people get involved in solving the refugee crisis. Throughout the weekend, several organizations including the International Rescue Committee and the Utah Department of Workforce Services will be on hand to help volunteers sign up and learn how they can help. In addition, over 1500 tickets to the museum have been distributed to refugees so they can come to the museum and share their incredible story.
