WOODSTOCK, Vt., Nov. 10, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The first snow has fallen on Woodstock, Vermont, coating the last of the colorful fall foliage with some early season frosting. Coupled with the town's Federal homes and buildings, many of which were lovingly preserved by the Rockefellers and Frederick Billings, Woodstock is a simply magical destination for a family getaway this winter season.

Whether you're looking for alpine skiing, snowshoeing, nordic skiing, or riding a "fat" bike, or you prefer to spend the weekend drinking piping hot chocolate and reading by a cozy fire, this quintessential New England town has it all.

Here's a sampling of what else is happening this winter season:

  • 2016 Audi FIS Ski World Cup at Killington Resort, November 26-27
Just a 30 minute drive from Woodstock, the Audi FIS Ski World Cup comes to Killington Resort this year! Book your stay in Woodstock and then drive up to the mountain to catch U.S. Ski Team superstars Mikaela Shiffrin, Lindsey Vonn and Julia Mancuso compete with the best alpine skiers in the world.  On your way back to Woodstock, stop at the Long Trail Brewery to have some of the best craft beers that are famous in Vermont.

  • Suicide Six Ski Area, mid-December season opening
Closer to Woodstock is the iconic Suicide Six Ski Area, established in the mid 1930's on the opposite side of the hill from the site of the first ski tow in the U.S.  A new quad lift shortens the ride to the top of the mountain, from which skiers can choose the beginner trail "Easy Mile" or test their skills on the challenging "Face". The modern base lodge, replete with hot cider, crisp French fries and a full restaurant, provide a warm, family-friendly experience.  Ski and board rentals are available on site.

  • 15th Annual Holiday House Tour, December 10
Experience the warm hospitality of old New England, when Woodstock's most charming houses deck their halls and open their doors for what has become a quintessential holiday tradition. Presented by the Pentangle Council on the Arts, docents await at each location to provide historical information and answer questions, and some of the homes feature live performances by local musicians.

  • Wassail Weekend, December 9-11
Wassail Weekend in Woodstock is packed with fun and festive events! Voted one of Vermont's Top Ten Winter events by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce, the highlight of the weekend is the Wassail Parade through the center of Woodstock, with more than fifty horses and riders dressed in holiday costumes and period dress from the early 19th Century. Santa Claus himself usually puts in an appearance! For the full schedule of events, click here.

  • Wassail Weekend Giveaway, now through November 15
