VIA Rail Honoured with the Veterans Employment Transition Award

MONTRÉAL, April 17, 2019 /CNW Telbec/ - On April 10, VIA Rail Canada (VIA Rail) received the Veterans Employment Transition Award at the annual Celebration of Service on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. The award is bestowed by an all-party committee of Parliamentarian veterans and acknowledges the contributions of private and public sector employers valuing the unique experience of our Veterans and Reservists. This year, it was awarded to VIA Rail in recognition of its exceptional commitment to implementing innovative programs supporting veterans re-entering the workforce.

The Hon. Erin O’Toole, MP for Durham; Leona Alleslev, MP for Aurora–Oak Ridges–Richmond Hill; Marc Rousseau, Lt-Col (ret’d) & VIA Rail military consultant; Jacques Fauteux, Lt-Cmdr (ret’d) & VIA Rail Director, Governmental and Community Relations; the Hon. Karen McCrimmon, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness and MP for Kanata–Carleton; and the Hon. Andrew Leslie, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and MP for Orléans (CNW Group/VIA Rail Canada Inc.)

"We are proud to give this award to a VIA Rail whose steadfast commitment to our Veterans, our Canadian Armed Forces members, and their families is demonstrated through their important rebate on train fares, their partnerships, and their leadership on the employment of transitioning members and Reservists," said the Honourable Erin O'Toole, Member of Parliament for Durham, who presented the award to VIA Rail.

"Over the past few years, VIA Rail has added new initiatives to express our gratitude to the members of our Canadian Armed Forces. We have positioned ourselves as one of the top employers for Canadians who are part of the military community. In fact, VIA Rail has quadrupled the number of veterans and reservists it employs in the past five years. They stand out as employees not only thanks to their technical and professional expertise, but also and especially for their leadership, loyalty, work ethic and team spirit. Their military service shows that they are committed to serving their fellow Canadians, just like everyone at VIA Rail."
Yves Desjardins-Siciliano – President and Chief Executive Officer of VIA Rail Canada

The Celebration of Service is sponsored by True Patriot Love, a nationwide charitable organization that supports military families, funds community programs and contributes to the work of the Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research.

This prize is just the latest honour VIA Rail has received for its efforts and its support of the Armed Forces. In 2017, VIA Rail was recognized by the Canadian Forces Liaison Council (CLFC) as the best employer in Quebec for its support of employees in the reserves.
