PLANO, Texas, June 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Wayne County area kids can now shoot for the stars…literally. Nancy Lieberman Charities Founder, Basketball Hall-of-Famer, two-time Olympian and NBA Sacramento Kings Assistant Coach Nancy Lieberman, WorldVentures Foundation™ and Midwest Sport Court opened a DreamCourt at Clear Creek Park, 1201 W Main St., Richmond, Ind. Monday, June 6 in a tribute to former NBA Head Coach Del Harris. The park is near the Wayne County Boys & Girls Club.
DreamCourts are top-quality, multipurpose play spaces built in collaboration with WorldVentures Foundation, Nancy Lieberman Charities and Sport Court®, with the goal of providing children in underprivileged communities a safe area to play basketball, interact socially, and learn important lessons about teamwork and good sportsmanship. The Wayne County Boys & Girls Club DreamCourt is the 25th court installed to date in Boys & Girls Clubs and community parks across the country. It is 84 feet by 100 feet and has six basketball goals.
The court is a gift from Nancy Lieberman Charities and WorldVentures Foundation to Del Harris and the Wayne County Boys & Girls Club, and located near Earlham College where Harris got his coaching start. Earlham College VP, and former college team member of Del Harris, Mr. Avis Stewart served as the event emcee. "This is a unique partnership," said Stewart, "and we need more partnerships like this to happen in order for communities to thrive."
This DreamCourt is partially funded by WorldVentures Foundation and the Boys & Girls Club of Wayne County.
Nancy Lieberman shared her sentiments during the dedication ceremony, saying, "Life is about relationships, and it's about giving." She paid tribute to her friend, Muhammed Ali when talking about him and Del Harris as examples of people who make their life about doing things with love and with a giving spirit. Speaking directly to the youth in attendance Lieberman said, "This court is not mine, it's not Del's, it's yours. And we hope that one day you will do the same for other kids."
Mayor Dave Snow opened the dedication ceremony by saying, "We have been recognized as a three-time playful city destination, and this court represents that we are a city that provides playful competitive spaces for our youth to thrive."
Del Harris reminisced about his early years in the area, "I came to Richmond over 50 years ago and played on the old court right here in this park. In fact, we won a tournament here and many of my teammates went on to be inducted into the Indiana Hall of Fame." He went on to thank nearby Earlham College "for taking a chance on me, giving me the head coaching job at a young 27 years old."
Nancy Lieberman, a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, made history this past summer when she was hired by the Sacramento Kings, becoming just the second female assistant coach in NBA history. Following the ribbon-cutting she officially opened the court with her signature half-court backwards shot accompanied by members of the WorldVentures Foundation, Richmond Parks and Recreation Superintendent Denise Retz, Sport Court Midwest representatives, members of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, and board members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County.
