Yesterday's Earthquake in Nicaragua Did Not Affect Tourist Attractions

The epicenter of the earthquake registered in Lake Managua at a depth of 10 kilometers. Several aftershocks of lesser magnitude were felt throughout the night. Damage to houses and buildings in Nagarote, about 30 miles northwest of Managua, was reported, but no major tourist destinations were affected. The cities of Granada, Masaya, Leon, San Juan del Sur and the Pacific and Caribbean beaches, suffered no damage. All flights into and out of the country and tours have continued as scheduled.

"During this spring and summer travel season, when the number of national and international visitors increases at Nicaragua's many tourist destinations, we want to reassure the public that roads, hotels and tourist attractions are safe and operational," said Mayra Salinas, the Minister of Tourism. "The Nicaraguan government has undertaken all necessary provisions to ensure the safety of Nicaraguans and visitors to our country."
